BBC explores issues raised in Denver Center’s “Just Like Us”

"Boston Calling," a BBC radio program that puts a global perspective  on the American experience, is currently exploring the issues raised in the Denver Center Theatre Company’s recent world-premiere play, "Just Like Us."

Breaking news: Boehner rules out action on immigration reform

Of interest to anyone who just attended the Denver Center Theatre Company’s world premiere of the play “Just Like Us”: Moments ago, House Speaker John Boehner ruled out any action in the House on immigration reform this year.

"Just Like Us," adapted by Karen Zacarias from the book by Helen Thorpe, is the true story of four Denver high-school seniors who were born in Mexico, two with documented status and two without. It closed on Nov. 3.

Actor Mary Bacon is the daughter of two journalists. And for the first time in 20 years, she is back on stage in her hometown playing one of the most reluctantly well-known journalists Denver.

As the Denver Center Theatre Company is presenting the world-premiere play “Just Like Us” about four Denver girls whose college opportunities are divded by their legal status, some heavy hitters in the local music scene have released a single calling for immigration reform. Shawn King of Colorado’s DeVotchKa and Stephen Brackett of Flobots have collaborated with Massachusetts multi-instrumentalist Erin McKeown to release a free, downloadable track called “The Jailer: Part 2.”

It is a remix of McKeown’s song inspired by the challenges facing residents, both recent immigrants and U.S. citizens, in border communities.

"Just Like Us" author Helen Thorpe was honored Saturday, Sept. 28, at the first-ever Denver School of the Arts Friends Foundation gala at the school.

Thorpe was given the Community Arts Leadership Award for her role in inspiring youth through the arts. The presenter was Susan Daggett, an environmental attorney, DSA mom and wife of Colorado Senator Michael Bennet. (Their daughter made a video appearance in the Denver Center Theatre Company’s production of “The Giver” last season.)

"Just Like Us" won the Colorado Book Award and is being adapted for the stage by the Denver Center Theatre Company. It opens for previews Oct. 4.

"Just Like Us" is a Denver Center Theatre Company commission adapted by Zacarias from the acclaimed book by Thorpe. It’s the Denver-based story of four high-school students divided by their immigration status. It opens Oct. 10 in the Stage Theatre.
